Okay, I didn’t just learn 10 things, I learned a hell of a lot more but here are 10 that I’ve picked out and done a quick hand typography piece with.
Eat a frog
This one isn’t quite as disgusting as it may sound and no I don’t suggest you go out and literally munch on a slimy frog.
So the story behind it… the frog is that thing that’s on your list that you need to do, you keep putting it off because you really don’t want to do it even though it would be beneficial to just get it done as it’s holding you back. So eating a frog is actually getting that thing done! They suggest you eat your frogs for breakfast because it’s difficult to concentrate on your day when you keep thinking about that frog you’ve got to eat. Get it over with and you can get on with being productive then.
Promote, promote, promote…
I think this one is pretty self-explanatory. You’ve got to keep promoting! And remember the more you give the more you get.
Fail fast. Fail cheap.
You’re going to fail sometimes… that’s just business. So get your ideas out there and sell them before you spend all your time and money on making it a business. Make sure it works. Its better to fail fast and cheap than for example spending money on a website then realising your idea isn’t going to work the way you first thought.
Ask 7 times
7 is the number of times you need to “ask” someone before they say yes. Asking may not be as direct as “Do you want my product?” but could be a promo email, a phone call, a Facebook ad, basically you need to be seen by them 7 times. Don’t take this literally and ask 7 times in a row like a child asking for ice cream because that won’t work
Sell before you create
If you sell your product before you create it you know that it will definitely sell. Find out who wants it, get them to pay for it in advance, then use the money to produce it. It also means no money out of your pocket. Woo!
At the Popup Business School they proved what happens to your website views when you are active and promoting everyday on social media (they go up yay) then they showed what happens when you stop even just for one day. They completely plummet. You need to put time in to promoting your business everyday. Make it part of your daily routine to be spending a set amount of time on the social media platforms where your target audience is.
Content is king
This is in relation to your website. Content is king and Video and images are queen. Sure you might have a beautiful website but if the right content isn’t there, there isn’t much point. Your website needs to tell people what you do and exactly what they should do to get you to do what you do for them.
Spend as much time building your confidence as your business
Becoming confident in what I do and believing I am good enough was a giant step in the right direction. It made a huge difference to how people see me and now means I can target higher end clients and charge what I’m worth. Confidence is key!
Your network is your net worth
This was one of my most valuable lessons. It basically means if you hang around with people that aren’t making money you wont make money… if you start hanging around with people making it in the business world you will start to see a change in your income.
The first time I attended the Popup Business School was in Newport for a day. Alan (Popup Business School co-founder) explained to me about how you either bring yourself up or down to the level of your main 5 people. Your 5 main people being the 5 people you spend your most time with. If you hang around with people going nowhere you will inevitably go nowhere but if you hang around with inspiring motivational people they will bring you up to their level.
Don’t spend time worrying about things you can’t control
This was and still is one of my biggest downfalls. At times I worry so much about things I can’t control, I get ridiculously overwhelmed resulting in not being able to do anything! Stupid right? But we are all guilty of worrying about things out of our control. We worry about what’s happening on the news (I highly recommend you stop watching the news I did over 2 years ago and it was the best decision) we worry about loved ones and we worry about what others think. If there is nothing you can do about it, stop worrying about it and if there is something you can do, amazing, do it.
So that’s it. Hope these tips help you as much as they’ve helped me.
